No. New for the 2026-27 season, Rhode Island specifically prohibits using drones to help recover wildlife for hunting. Here’s what the rule says.

What Rhode Island’s rule says

From the Rhode Island hunting regulations:

“The use of drones or other remotely operated unmanned aircraft systems and devices to drive or disturb wildlife, or aid in the take and/or recovery of wildlife for the purpose of hunting, is prohibited.”

This is a new regulation for 2026-27. Before this season, Rhode Island’s guide didn’t have a drone rule.

Which animals does this cover?

Rhode Island’s rule covers all wildlife. In Rhode Island, that includes deer and wild turkey.

Hunting in another state?

Several states do allow drone recovery, each with its own conditions, including Maryland. Find a pilot on the map.

Verify before you fly

Drone rules change, and how they apply can depend on your situation. Before any drone recovery, contact the Rhode Island DEM Division of Fish & Wildlife to confirm it’s allowed.
