Not clearly. Oregon bans using drones to track, locate, or scout wildlife in aid of hunting. Read as written, that rule is aimed at using a drone to help hunt animals, not at recovering one that’s already been shot. It doesn’t specifically mention recovering a wounded or dead deer. Here’s what it says.

What Oregon’s rule says

From the Oregon hunting regulations, it’s unlawful to use drones for:

  • “Hunting, trapping, or angling.”
  • “Aiding hunting, trapping, or angling through the use of drones to harass, track, locate or scout wildlife.”
  • “Interfering in the acts of a person who is lawfully hunting, trapping or angling.”

It’s also unlawful to hunt within eight hours of having been transported by, communicating with, or receiving information on the location of a game mammal from an aircraft.

Oregon defines a drone broadly, as any unmanned vehicle that operates in the air, on water, or on land, remotely or autonomously.

The rule is written around hunting, using a drone to find or follow animals in order to take them. It doesn’t mention recovering a wounded or dead animal, and it doesn’t make an exception for it either.

Which animals does this cover?

Oregon’s rule covers all wildlife. In Oregon, that includes elk, black-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn (antelope), black bear, and bighorn sheep.

How Oregon defines hunting

Oregon law (ORS 496.004) defines “hunt” as:

“to take or attempt to take any wildlife by means involving the use of a weapon or with the assistance of any mammal or bird.”

Verify before you fly

Drone rules change, and how they apply can depend on your situation. Before any drone recovery, contact the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to confirm it’s allowed.
