Not clearly. Nevada bans using a drone to locate game animals for hunting, and to locate or observe big game in most management units from July 1 through the end of February. The rules don’t specifically mention recovering a wounded or dead deer. Here’s what they say.

What Nevada’s rules say

From the Nevada hunting regulations:

  • It’s unlawful to kill, or help another person kill, a big game animal with the use of a drone.
  • It’s unlawful to harass any game mammals or game birds by any means, including manned or unmanned aircraft.
  • It’s unlawful to spot or locate game with any manned or unmanned aircraft and communicate that information to a person on the ground for the purpose of hunting, within 24 hours after the aircraft has landed.

And under Nevada’s scouting from aircraft rule:

“A person shall not, for the purpose of hunting or trapping, locate or observe or assist a person in locating or observing any big game mammal, game bird or fur-bearing mammal in a management unit … during the period beginning on July 1 and ending on the last day of February of each calendar year with the use of … An unmanned aerial vehicle…”

Evidence of a violation includes flying slowly at low altitudes, hovering, circling, or repeatedly flying over areas where big game is found.

The rules don’t mention recovery or make an exception for it.

Which animals does this cover?

Nevada’s rules cover big game mammals. In Nevada, that includes mule deer, elk, pronghorn (antelope), bighorn sheep, and mountain goat.

Verify before you fly
