Not clearly. Iowa doesn’t allow drones to hunt deer, and its rules don’t specifically mention using a drone to recover a deer. A 2026 bill to allow drone recovery failed. Here’s what Iowa says, and what you can use instead.

What Iowa’s rules say

From the Iowa deer hunting regulations:

“You may not use dogs, domestic animals, bait, radios, handguns, rifles and crossbows, automobiles, aircraft, drones, electronic calls or any mechanical conveyance or device to hunt deer.”

Iowa law also bars hunters from using a mobile radio transmitter, including a cell phone, to communicate the location or direction of game (Iowa Code 481A.24).

Iowa’s rules don’t specifically mention drone recovery, and none allows it.

Which animals does this cover?

Iowa’s guide names drones in its list of devices that can’t be used to hunt deer.

How Iowa defines hunting

Iowa law (Iowa Code 481A.1) defines “take” and “hunt” together as:

“any pursuing, or any hunting, fishing, killing, trapping, snaring, netting, searching for or shooting at, stalking or lying in wait for any game, animal, bird, or fish … whether or not such animal be then subsequently captured, killed, or injured.”

So in Iowa, searching for game is part of the legal definition of hunting, and Iowa’s rules say drones may not be used to hunt deer.

The bill that failed

House File 2112 would have allowed drones to help track and locate wounded deer. It didn’t pass in the 2026 session. If Iowa passes a recovery law, we’ll update this article.

What you can do instead

Tracking dogs are legal. Under Iowa Code 481A.56A:

  • A hunter with a valid hunting license and deer license who has wounded a deer may use a dog to track and retrieve it.
  • The dog must be under physical control at all times on a lead no longer than 50 feet.
  • An unarmed dog handler helping the hunter doesn’t need a license.
  • The licensed hunter who wounded the deer may finish it with a legal method of take for that season.
  • Tracking on private property requires the owner’s consent.
  • Outside legal deer hunting hours, no one tracking may have a firearm or archery device.

Tip: if you’re tracking with a dog after legal hours, leave guns and bows behind.

Verify before you fly

Drone rules change, and how they apply can depend on your situation. Before any drone recovery, contact the Iowa DNR to confirm it’s allowed.
