Florida doesn’t have a rule that specifically allows or bans drone deer recovery. Its hunting rules do ban using aircraft, including drones, to shoot at, harass, or herd game. Here’s what the rules say.

What Florida’s rules say

The Florida hunting regulations list these as prohibited methods of taking game:

“Shooting or attempting to shoot or harass any bird, fish or other animal from aircraft (including drones), except as specifically authorized by a Federal or State issued license or permit”

“Herding or driving game with vehicles, boats or aircraft (including drones)”

These come from Florida’s rule on methods of taking game (68A-12.002, F.A.C.).

The rules don’t mention using a drone to recover a deer that’s already been shot.

Which animals does this cover?

Florida’s aircraft rules cover any bird, fish, or other animal, not just deer. In Florida, that includes deer, wild turkey, and wild hogs.

Before you fly

Because Florida’s rules don’t address drone recovery directly, check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) before a drone recovery. Make sure the drone isn’t used to harass, herd, or drive any animal. Pilots who charge for a search need an FAA Part 107 certificate.

What the rules do allow: a leashed dog

Per the Florida hunting regulations, “Dogs on leashes may be used to trail wounded game mammals during all seasons.” Hunters using dogs on private land need the landowner’s written permission, and dogs must wear collars with the owner’s name and address.

Verify before you fly

Drone rules change, and how they apply can depend on your situation. Before any drone recovery, contact the FWC to confirm it’s allowed.
