Not clearly. California bans using any aircraft or other device capable of flight to locate big game from 48 hours before until 48 hours after any big game season in the same area. The rule doesn’t specifically mention recovering a wounded or dead deer. Here’s what it says.
What California’s rule says
California’s rule on hunting from vehicles and aircraft (14 CCR 251(a)) says:
“No person shall use any motorized, hot-air, or unpowered aircraft or other device capable of flight or any earth orbiting imaging device to locate or assist in locating big game mammals beginning 48 hours before and continuing until 48 hours after any big game hunting season in the same area.”
It also bans pursuing, driving, herding, or taking any bird or mammal from any motor-driven air or land vehicle.
The rule doesn’t mention recovery or make an exception for it.
Which animals does this cover?
California’s rule covers big game mammals. In California, that includes deer, elk, pronghorn (antelope), black bear, and bighorn sheep.
How California defines hunting
California law (Fish and Game Code § 86) defines “take” as:
“hunt, pursue, catch, capture, or kill, or attempt to hunt, pursue, catch, capture, or kill.”

Verify before you fly
Drone rules change, and how they apply can depend on your situation. Before any drone recovery, contact the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to confirm it’s allowed.
Last checked November 2026 against 14 CCR 251. Rules can change, so check with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife before you hunt. This article is general information, not legal advice.
