Alabama doesn’t have a rule that specifically allows or bans drone deer recovery. It bans hunting by the aid of aircraft, and it requires written permission to fly a drone on a Wildlife Management Area. Here’s what the rules say.

What Alabama’s rules say

Alabama’s rule on prohibited hunting methods (Ala. Admin. Code 220-2-.11) makes it unlawful to:

“concentrate, drive, rally, molest or to hunt, take, capture or kill or attempt to hunt, take, capture or kill any bird or animal from or by the aid of … Any automobile, motorcar, aircraft, train, motorboat, sailboat or any type mechanically propelled device…”

The rule doesn’t mention drones by name, and it doesn’t mention recovering a wounded or dead deer.

Which animals does this cover?

Alabama’s aircraft rule covers any bird or animal, and its WMA drone rule applies on all WMA land. Its leashed-dog rule covers wounded deer.

Wildlife Management Areas

On Alabama’s WMAs (Ala. Admin. Code 220-2-.55), it’s unlawful for any unauthorized person to launch, land, possess, or use a drone without written permission from the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division.

On WMAs, leashed dogs may be used to retrieve wounded deer, limited to two dogs per tracking event.

Before you fly

Because Alabama’s rules don’t address drone recovery directly, check with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources before a drone recovery, and never fly on a WMA without written permission. Pilots who charge for a search need an FAA Part 107 certificate.

Finding a pilot

Drone Deer Tracker is adding pilots in Alabama. Check the map for the closest pilot to your hunt, including nearby Tennessee, where drone recovery is allowed. Are you a thermal drone pilot in Alabama? Apply to be listed.

Verify before you fly

Drone rules change, and how they apply can depend on your situation. Before any drone recovery, contact the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to confirm it’s allowed.
